Pala Raceway sits just outside the small community of Pala in northern San Diego County, tucked into the hills near the banks of the San Luis Rey River. This working motocross facility shares the broader Pala off-road area with the more famous Fox Raceway, but operates as a grassroots alternative geared toward local riders and regional competition. The track is built on rugged, native terrain typical of Southern California’s backcountry—expect hardpack soil, natural elevation changes, and a mix of technical sections and open rhythm sections shaped by the landscape. It's less polished than professional venues, which gives it a no-frills, rider-focused vibe. The venue runs open riding and practice days regularly, making it accessible for recreational riders looking to build skills or test bikes. It also hosts club-level motocross racing throughout the year, drawing competitors from Southern California’s amateur racing circuits. Because of its proximity to both inland deserts and coastal mountain ranges, the area sees a steady flow of riders from across the region, especially on weekends. Pala Raceway is best suited for intermediate to experienced riders who appreciate a raw, authentic motocross experience without the event-day crowds or production of larger venues. While it lacks the amenities of commercial parks, it offers something valuable: consistent track maintenance, community-oriented operations, and convenient access to extended riding in surrounding public lands. If you're in North County San Diego and seeking real seat time on honest dirt, Pala Raceway delivers quietly, reliably, and without distraction.

Know Before You Go

Open practice days
Most MX parks run open practice on weekends for $25-50. Sign in at the gate, sign a waiver, and ride your allotted moto groups (typically 30 min on, 30 off).
Required gear
Helmet (DOT or Snell M-rated), goggles, gloves, chest protector, knee/shin guards, boots, and a full-sleeve jersey. Most tracks won't let you ride without all of it.
Class structure
Tracks separate riders by bike size (50cc / 65cc / 85cc / 250cc / 450cc) and by skill (beginner / novice / intermediate / pro). Sessions rotate through the day.
Track conditions
Tracks get watered before sessions and groomed between motos. Soft loam in the morning hardens into ruts by afternoon — adjust suspension and tire pressure.
