Hangtown MX, located within the Prairie City State Vehicle Recreation Area in Rancho Cordova, serves as a cornerstone of the Northern California motocross scene. Situated on the eastern edge of the Sacramento metro area, this off-highway vehicle (OHV) park is easily accessible for riders and fans from both the Bay Area and the Central Valley. The venue is best known for hosting the Hangtown Motocross National, the traditional season opener for the AMA Pro Motocross Championship, an event that draws professional riders, top teams, and large spectator crowds each summer. Its established presence on the national circuit makes it a must-visit for fans of professional motocross, while the surrounding SVRA land supports broader off-road recreation. What sets Hangtown MX apart is its combination of high-profile racing and deep regional roots. The track is built to AMA standards, with challenging elevation changes, hard-packed soil, and natural terrain typical of the Sierra Nevada foothills. Unlike private tracks, its location within a state-managed OHV area means riders can often access additional trails and riding zones beyond the main motocross circuit. This blend of professional racing infrastructure and public off-road access makes it ideal for serious amateur riders, families attending race weekends, and off-highway enthusiasts looking to explore the area. If you're coming for the Hangtown Classic or a practice day, be prepared for warm temperatures, dusty conditions, and a well-organized event layout typical of major national stops. It’s a working motocross venue first, with a legacy that’s shaped American motocross for decades.

Know Before You Go
- Open practice days
- Most MX parks run open practice on weekends for $25-50. Sign in at the gate, sign a waiver, and ride your allotted moto groups (typically 30 min on, 30 off).
- Required gear
- Helmet (DOT or Snell M-rated), goggles, gloves, chest protector, knee/shin guards, boots, and a full-sleeve jersey. Most tracks won't let you ride without all of it.
- Class structure
- Tracks separate riders by bike size (50cc / 65cc / 85cc / 250cc / 450cc) and by skill (beginner / novice / intermediate / pro). Sessions rotate through the day.
- Track conditions
- Tracks get watered before sessions and groomed between motos. Soft loam in the morning hardens into ruts by afternoon — adjust suspension and tire pressure.
