Nomex

A flame-resistant meta-aramid material used to construct racing suits, underwear, gloves, and other safety apparel. It protects drivers from fire in case of accidents.

Nomex is a brand name for a synthetic aromatic polyamide polymer, known as meta-aramid, developed by DuPont in the early 1960s. Its heat and flame-resistant properties quickly made it essential in various industries, including aerospace and, crucially, motorsports.

Nomex works by thickening and carbonizing when exposed to extreme heat. This creates a protective barrier between the heat source and the wearer's skin, significantly reducing burn injuries. Racing suits are typically constructed with multiple layers of Nomex to maximize protection during high-speed crashes and fires. Drivers also wear Nomex underwear, socks, gloves, and head coverings for full body coverage.

Proper care and maintenance of Nomex apparel are vital to ensure its continued effectiveness. Washing instructions should be strictly followed to avoid damaging the fabric's protective properties. Regularly inspecting Nomex gear for wear and tear is also essential.
